Participants in this seminar will see how the process of extracting and processing words and phrases from corpora can make their language more fluent, accurate, sophisticated and idiomatic. When speaking and writing in a foreign language, we often „notice the gap“ between what we want to express, and the language we have available to us. Through asking thousands of native speakers, whose language has been sampled and stored in these language databases, we can discover the patterns of normal usage that plug the gap. We can observe and use features of language at all levels of the Hierarchy of Language.
