CLIL Won’t Kill (I & II)—Au contraire!

Plenary talk
Saturday 09.00—10.00

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), teaching content subjects through other languages or vice versa, is an important emerging trend in current educational practices in many countries—and makes sense for a variety of reasons. This talk will look at those reasons, include an overview of the theoretical underpinnings of CLIL and then move into how the theory has been put into practice in various materials for young learners, tween-agers and teenagers. We’ll look at both ‘real CLIL’ and bilingual education (CLIL Won’t Kill I) and ‘CLIL lite’ or working subject matter into language classes (CLIL Won’t Kill II).

Developing Thinking Skills in the Young Learner Language Classroom

Workshop, pre-school, primary (6-10), language schools
Saturday, 12.30—13.15, room 4

We’ll be investigating how to enhance very young learners’ thinking skills—along with their English! We’ll try out activities, stories, songs and games from both Super Safari for pre-primary and the lower levels of Super Minds for primary and their accompanying DVD-ROMs. Both courses include specifically designed tasks that develop children’s foreign language competence while also promoting the interpersonal and thinking skills they need as they grow older: memory, concentration, creativity, visualization, cross-curricular thinking and an awareness of social values. (Don’t forget your thinking cap.)

Keep your Teenagers’ Eyes Open with Video to Discover and Learn

Workshop, secondary (11-15), language schools
Sunday, 10.15—11.00, room 1

We‘ll be looking especially at the added value that video brings into the ELT classroom and how this relates specifically to a teenage generation brought up on screens. We’ll look at examples from Eyes Open with integrated Discovery Education videos to motivate and engage teenage students. We’ll try out a range of activities and practical ideas for exploiting images and video that focus on real-world topics and allow students to explore the wider world while also accelerating their language acquisition and improving their productive skills.
